Scrimmages and Boys from the "Cheering" Universe
I tried so hard to write something for ASR3's birthday. I failed. I have an original plot bunny that's eating me alive right now... a frontier world that had been cut off because of an interplanetary war is struggling to survive. One of the old customs they've brought back is a penal system based on slavery. But this is not a world where slavery is sexy fun. Nope, but it does give lots of chances for H/C.

Anyway, I'm here with your daily dose of Moonridge stories.

And it's time to rejoin the boys at the girls' thirteenth birthday.

    fic search
    hey everybody!

this is a bit of an unusual search. i just finished reading the coolest book about fighter training. The author created a term; "The Lizard Brain"
I know for a fact that someone used it in a spander fic not too long ago. If you know this one please give me title? author? link?
Because now that I've read the book I'm kinda focusing on the fic. I want to read it again, and frankly it's bugging me that I can't remember.

Words are the physicians of a mind diseased.
Writercon is fast approaching, and I'm feeling out out out of the loop. I've got this vague gnawing feeling in my stomach, part anticipation, part nerves, and part craving. The first two will be solved when I land in MSP (assuming that Delta quits trying to rape and plunder my bank account), but the third can only be assuaged by fic. Lots and lots of fic.

So, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to rec me fic. Any fandom, any length, any anything. Point me to your favorite story, or stories. I will read it (or them) with joy and gratitude. You can even quiz me at the con, if you like!

    A day at the spa

Well, okay, I’m not really spending the day at the spa. I’m spending an hour at the massage therapist’s this afternoon. :whoo: I know it won’t fix all my problems in one visit, but it should help. Though I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it doesn’t also hurt. Hurt so good? I’m sure there’s a John Cougar Mellencamp song in there somewhere… LOL!

On this date in 1922, future Tarzan actor and Olympic medalist (he won five gold and one bronze) Johnny Weissmuller broke the world swimming record for the 100 meters freestyle with a time of 58.6 seconds.

Tonight for our TV viewing pleasure, we have new episodes of Burn Notice and Royal Pains.

Got another page written last night. :cheer:

Reading: Finished up Santa Clawed and am now enjoying the genius of Terry Pratchett by reading Making Money. Moist von Lipwig from Going Postal makes a return appearance. This time around the Patrician wants Moist to take over the Royal Bank of Ankh-Morpork and the Royal Mint. Moist is more than a little reluctant to do this. But he’s more worried about not taking the job.

It would be lovely to see some more spander lovers there.
Come and join us and send yourself to Coventry. (Yes, I know, but the old jokes are the best, aren't they?)

    John fathers children in Pegasus
I've just watched the tower and despite a) personally believing that any mentioning of marriage might have put a considerable damper on Johns - *uh* - let's call it "desire to perform" and b) John declaring in the end that he turned Mara down, are there any stories out there where Mara actually got pregnant and John finds out way later? I mean, a) my personal belief says nothing about what actually happened and b) (if we stretch our imagination a bit) could be John downright lying or obfuscating what actually happened ("as long as it's not *real* penetration, it isn't *real* sex, right? Right?" *whistles*) or even John talking about turning down the offer of marriage, concealing the fact that he actually *did* "get the girl".

And while I'm on it, every story where John finds out he has fathered a child with a woman from the Pegasus-Galaxy is welcome, as long as it's either gen, McShep or ends up McShep.

    Diplomacy - Rodney style!
I'm looking for any stories where Rodney makes agreements/treaties/deals with other people. It can be allies or enemies but he needs to be his usual blunt self. I recently read 'Failure of Self Perception' by texanfan and it made me want more.

I'm also looking for stories where the scientists on Atlantis are protective of Rodney, preferably without him being aware of it.

As always, McKay/Sheppard preferred but I'll read anything :o)

    Make Up Entry

Okay, to make up for the darkness that was my last entry, a trip to the lighter side, also having to do with pets!

Once upon a time, we had a dog named Kuta ...

Kuta was a Lhasa Apso, then ancient breed of Tibetan temple guardians, and very VERY much my father's dog.  Legend has it that Kuta would attack anything dog-like, up to and including a pack of dobermans (rumor also has it the dobermans were very confused about being attacked by a 13 pound puff ball.)

Kuta was happy to be my father's dog until, one day, my mom got preggers with my big sis. Mom says it was 2-3 months into the pregnancy.  Dad says it was 2-3 days into the pregnancy.  Anyway, extremely early in the pregnancy, Kuta shifted into THE PROTECTOR OF THE PREGNANT ONE. He wouldn't let anyone near her, up to and including my father, the previous Lord and Master. Mom told me that Kuta was so intent on his duty that he would bark at Dad, warning him off, even if it meant all four paws jumping on herself (and passenger.) Fairly quickly, morning goodbye kisses were forgone.

Then the baby was born, and Kuta would shift loyalties again, this time to the baby.  My mother was allowed, NO ONE ELSE!  Granny was told "Wait until we get the dog out of the room before you try to hold the baby," but she ignored it, because it was Kuta, a friend to all!  Kuta attacked Granny, and from then on, she would wait until the dog was out of the room to approach the baby, because she was not on the "approved" list.  Bouncers were less strict than this guardian, you can be sure!

When Incandragon was 2 years old, the dog went back to being my dad's dog.  Whew, MASTER, I've missed you so much!  I was so busy, you wouldn't believe!  But everything is alright now, I'm your dog again!

When Mom got pregnant with me, the exact same thing happened.  Neither of the parents can remember if Incandragon was on the "approved" list to get near the baby.

I told this story to a young friend of mine, and she responded, "Well, no wonder you bond with dogs so much, it happened pre-natally."

I wonder if that was it?

The Speed of Dark by Elizabeth Moon
This is the most literary work by Moon that I've read, and actually one of the best pieces of actual science fiction that I've encountered in years. It's a piece of fiction about real science, and it is clearly written with the intent of changing the viewer's perception of what is normal, what is important, and the complexity of how those two concepts interact. The message sidestepped my initial expectations. The way the story unfolds also deviates away from the rigid formulas and tropes of regular sci-fi.

I'll read Animals in Translation later this year. Lycangeek is reading it now, and we've already begun having discussions about the alien otherness of the autistics' way of perceiving the world. That feeling of "not quite human" gave the story more of a sci-fi -- aliens are living among us -- feeling than many of the stories that I've read that take place on other worlds or in some distant future. And it's largely real.

So yeah, I think it earned its Nebula Award. I'm glad I read it.

    Still no goats
The weather was so nice when I got home today that a few moments spent with the tomato plants turned into nearly two hours of pruning and weediing all of my plants. It was longer than I thought, but the sun was setting, the air was neither too hot nor cold, and it wasn't humid. It was relaxing, with the only breaks in the silence being when my neighbors passed by or when the nearby church chimed the hours.

I saw lots of worms. I'm guessing because of all the rain we've been having. I said hi and thanked them for all their hard work in the soil my plants are in. Also lots of ants, though thankfully we were pretty content to leave each other alone, much though me pulling out weeds near their homes understandably upset them.

Possibly the most fun was weeding around the vinca minor. I got it last year because there was a looooooong stretch of dirt right in front of my porch which needed something to keep it looking barren. The catch was that the dirt was shallow, in no way rich looking, and had a huge wooden fence right next to it which effectively blocked out most sunlight.

After doing research I found that the vinca minor was pretty much made for that spot, up to the point where I'm pretty sure that some of the entries mentioned that the ideal location for the plant was at my address.

Last year it didn't grow much, but this year it's been flowering and getting lush. It's slowly covering the space. But what was fun was watching it choke out the weeds. I felt like the vinca minor and I were working together, like it had hunted down the weeds and held them up for me to spot and I got to yank them out to help finish the job.

The best was when I got to the end. I hadn't bought enough last year to cover all the ground, so the end was where the dirt was thinnest and for the most part I let it be. Today as long as I was on a role I figured I may as well make a dent into the thick clump of weeds. As I started to pull, sure enough, I saw my creeping vines sneaking their way along the bottom of the dirt. I felt like a proud mama. A mama who was proud of her slowly murderous baby.

Now all I need to do is figure out if I want to call it Audrey or Dexter. 8)

Specifically for those of you who read my posts, AND have children... although anyone can chime in.

If you found out your child had put fireworks in the ears of an animal, what do you suggest the punishement would be?  Assume it is your own kid, and a stranger's dog or cat.  Also assuming the fireworks went off while in said ears.

    And the task...
of putting Ben together after this latest disaster continues apace.

For awhile there, I thought Ange was being utterly clueless. And then she bonked me on the head and said "I'm not stupid, remember? The puppy needs to feel like a man, and what better way than asserting himself and refusing me when I throw myself at his head yet again?"

I like Ange when she's devious. Because even wrecked like this, Ben's still terribly self-aware, and he'd still not jump on her offer. And she knows that.
